Wireless USB Extension for Virtual Reality Headsets

The USB2Air launched on Kickstarter this week will be the first wireless USB transmitter built for 1080p video. Practical applications include wireless webcams, virtual reality headsets and USB hubs.

Philadelphia, PA – Feb 27, 2017 – USB devices have taken over the world of tech but the world has yet to discover a wireless solution for connecting these devices to the computers that use them. HuddleCamHD has recently launched a solution on Kickstarter called the USB2Air which will cost only $254 for early bird project backers. The USB2Air will provide a wireless USB 2.0 link up to 30 Mbps for multiple USB devices. The initial videos show multiple 1080p USB webcams in use with the USB2Air which can operate at distances up to 25′.

  4. Works with any Windows 7, 8, 8.1, and 10 computer
  5. Eliminates the need for expensive USB extension cabling in small/medium sized rooms
  6. Includes a 1-year warranty from HuddleCamHD

HuddleCamHD is projecting worldwide deliveries to start May of 2017. Each week HuddleCamHD will host a live stream on Kickstarter to answer questions and show new USB devices connecting wirelessly with the device.

How is the USB2Air different from other products?

Anything you find under “Wireless USB” is for extending the ability to accept WiFi. There were some wireless USB transmission systems for video about 2-3 years ago but they were discontinued. Our is finally a reliable Wireless USB 2.0 extension system that can be used for webcams and other devices up to 30 Mbps.

Wireless USB 2 Resolution and Bandwidth Chart

Wireless USB 2.0 Bandwidth Chart

By | Bandwidth, Wireless USB | No Comments

Hello Pro AV & IT Professionals!

As you can see from the video and audio, resolution/bandwidth chart we have above it is important to manage the amount of bandwidth your USB devices will consume. Especially when we are using a wireless signal. The USB2Air will support up to 30 Megabits per second which as you can see will allow multiple 1080p devices to operate on the same wireless channel. We create this bandwidth chart to help wireless USB extension users determine the amount of devices they can use with a USB hub.

As you can see the higher your video resolution the more bandwidth you will consume. For example, a 1080p high-quality video stream will consume 12 MBPs (Megabits per second) which is what you would expect from a regular HD webcam. Because the USB2Air has more bandwidth to spare in a situation like this you can also add additional USB 2.0 devices on a USB Hubs to extend the functionality of the wireless USB 2.0 extender. So, continuing with our example we still have 30 MBPs of Bandwdith – 12 MBPs of Bandwidth = 18 additional MBPs of bandwidth for additional USB devices. Therefore you can usually expect to able to wireless transmit two (2) 1080p video signals using a single USB2Air wireless extension system.

MAX Wireless USB 2 Distance

MAX Wireless USB 2 Distance

In my opinion, 30MBPs is a good deal of bandwidth and the more important specification is distance from each wireless transmitter and receiver. As you will see in our specifications the USB2Air wireless extension system is recommended for use at 5 meter or 15 feet. Our engineer Matthew Davis mentions that the transmitter and receiver can work at distances up to 20-25 feet (7-9 meters) but this will require perfect line-of-sight and is still not recommended for normal use.

Once you have determined the USB 2.0 devices that you will be using for wireless USB extension you should consider the distance between the USB2Air transmitters and receivers. Because this kit includes a USB 2 Hub which powers the transmitter you may also want to consider using a short USB 2.0 cable to maintain line of sight between the wireless recevier and transmitter.

Wireless USB Webcam to Laptop

One of the most useful applications for the USB2Air is the point to point wireless USB connection between a laptop and a USB 2.0 webcam. Conferencing spaces around the world have to decide whether they will have a dedicated PC powering the television or allow users to bring their own devices known as (BYOD). In the dedicated PC application where the IT managers have a dedicated PC powering the display, there is often a speakerphone at the table used for video conferencing. In this scenario, the USB2Air can be used to wirelessly connect the speakerphone to the dedicated PC. In the BYOD scenario, the USB2Air can be used to connect a laptop to the USB webcam mounted on the wall.

Laptop with Wireless USB Connection

As you can see the Wireless USB 2.0 transmitter is labeled “Host”. The USB2Air includes a set of USB 2.0 adapters. One is labeled “Host” which is used to plug into the computer and the other is labeled “Device” which is used for the webcam in this case.

We have tested various USB video conferencing webcams such as:

  1. Logitech C920
  2. HuddleCamHD 3X
  3. HuddleCamHD 3XA
  4. HuddleCamHD 10X-720
  5. Logitech PTZ Pro

We have also tested various USB speakerphones such as

  1. Jabra Speak 410
  2. Phoenix Audio MT503
  3. Phoenix Audio Smart Spider
  4. Phoenix Audio MT505

USB Web Video Conferencing Market

Large Meeting Room with Wireless Camera

Large Meeting Room with Wireless Camera

Whether you are using the USB2AIR wireless USB extension system with Webcams or Speakerphones the USB web video conferencing market has been a focus for HuddleCamHD for many years. Wireless USB extension systems in particular has been a specialty with the invention of the industries first ever Wireless USB 3.0 conference camera, the HuddleCam Air in 2015. Then in 2016, HuddleCamHD released the HuddlePod which is the industries first 2.4 GHz wireless USB conferencing phone.

Plug and Play goes Wireless

HuddleCamHD has been a huge advocate for plug and play simplicity. In 2014, when HuddleCamHD had a full line of USB conferencing equipment most vendors were still promoting traditional hardware codecs and HDMI cameras. While these cameras and video conference codecs are certainly high quality, they lack the easy installation and use that USB devices offer. The entire line of HuddleCamHD products has always been focused on USB technology from USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 connection for both video and audio.

Other use cases – Wireless USB 2.0 Touch Screens

While the wireless USB extension of webcams and speakerphones remains the focus of HuddleCamHD for the dedicated web video conferencing market, there are also other use cases in the same space. For example, we have tested multiple USB touch screen monitors from Mimo that work great such as the 10.1″ Mimo Vue HD. This device is a USB monitor that can be used to launch applications for video conferencing and collaboration much like a Crestron or Extron control system. Because the device uses a USB 2.0 connection for video and control the USB2Air works perfectly for wireless extension. The “Host” USB 2.0 extension adapter plugs into the computer and the “Device” USB 2.0 adapter connects directly into the output connection for the touch screen. The computer literally has no idea that the cabling has been transmitted wirelessly.

Wireless USB Reliability for video conferencing

Video conferencing is a high bandwidth video intensive software and hardware solution. From a software standpoint most newer web based video conferencing platforms are leveraging both harware processing and cloud / server based processing. This means that the computer you are using is just as important as your internet connection (usually an i5 processor is suggested). Assuming you have all of the latest hardware and software in place, the last thing you want is your wireless USB 2.0 extension system causing issues.

With the USB2AIR you can be assured that HuddleCamHD has gone through extensive testing. Our datasheet outlines all the necessary information for flawless wireless USB 2.0 video and audio transmission within the given limitations of the device. The USB2Air will be the third successful wireless USB product HuddleCamHD has brought to market. Our engineers have spent ample time testing the limitation of this device and outlining the details in our data sheet and knowledge base.

Introducing our new wireless USB 2.0 video extension system

The wireless USB 2.0 video extension system has been made to transfer data without using any wires or cables. HD (high-definition) video can be sent and receive among the two devices (your computer and USB device). The distance between the two devices transmitter and the receiver should not be more than 30 feet or video quality will start to degrade. HuddleCamHD has developed the USB 2.0 video extension system to provide easy access to wireless video for USB device users with a variety of applications.

Wireless USB 2.0 Use Cases

Since our launch we have had a bunch of our Kickstarter backers ask us to create demonstration videos. The use cases requested have been predominantly from ProAV use cases for video conferencing or live streaming. Perhaps that is because of our background in the web conferencing arena but nevertheless it has led us to create the following use case videos. As we create more wireless USB 2.0 videos we will post them on YouTube and this blog post. So stay tuned and subscribe to our YouTube channel for all the latest information!

1080p Wireless USB 2.0 Video Transmission

Developing around a quality chipset known for reliable 1080p video transmission, each USB device is built for superb video transmission within the specified distance limitations. HuddleCamHD has been using wireless USB extension systems to improve the current web-conferencing experience for year now. HuddleCamHD is best known for bringing to market the world’s first ever Wireless USB conference camera in 2015 and the smashing success of the HuddlePod Air in 2016. New technological advancements have been used to make the USB2Air wireless USB 2.0 video extension system ready for the production and available in early Q2 of 2017.

Making A USB Webcam Wireless

This video demonstrates the brand new HuddleCamHD USB 2 Air in action. Here Paul shows us how to make a Logitech Webcam wireless. The USB2Air provides a wireless USB 2.0 extension link between the host and device transceivers up to 30 Mbps. This is more than enough bandwidth to use with multiple 1080p webcams, audio conferencing devices and even interactive touch screens.

So in this video, we wirelessly extend the USB 2.0 for a Logitech c920 to demonstrate a popular use case for Wireless USB extension. As we mention many times in a conferencing space environment the computer is either behind the LCD or a laptop on the table. Either way the USB2Air can be used as a wireless USB extender. If your laptop is on the conference room table you can use the USB2Air to connect devices wirelessly such as a Webcam to your laptop. If you computer is behind the LCD display you can use the USB2Air to add additional products such as a document camera or touch screen controller.

The reason why the USB2Air is so special is because the latency is super low (1 millisecond). So this wireless USB extension can be used for real time applications such as video conferencing and collaboration. As you can see in the video the latency is just as good as if the USB webcam was plugged directly into the computer. The only drawback is that this is a Windows-only product! That means this will work with Windows 7, 8, 8.1 or 10 but not any Mac computers!

Wireless Touch Screens – Interactive Projects and More

In this video, we review how to wirelessly transmit HDMI and USB control for touch screens with the USB2AIR. The USB2Air is a wireless USB video transceiver set that allows computers to wirelessly transmit data over a USB link up to 30 Mbps. This easily allows us to send HD 1080p video along with touch screen control.

The Sabrent USB 2.0 to HDMI adapter is SKU: USB-HDMI and retails for $49.99. This device provides the needed HDMI video from your computer connected wirelessly to the touch screen. The USB2Air provides the USB 2.0 control cable connection for most interactive products along with up 1080p video on a single channel with less than 1 milliseconds of latency.

As you can see the USB2Air is plugged into a USB to HDMI adapter from Sabrent and the USB connection on the Sharp Touch Screen Monitor. This allows our Windows computer to wirelessly send video using the standard display link drivers along with control for touch screen interactivity.
